Sports Massage
Sports massage is used by both athletes and non-sporting individuals due to its many benefits. It is used to help keep muscles toned and supple and can help with mobility of joints. Post-event massage can be used to reduce muscle soreness, enhance blood flow to muscles to assist in recovery and help maintain range of motion in joints. The benefits of sports massage include:
- Improved circulation and lymphatic flow
- Assist in the removal of metabolic waste
- Sedate or stimulate nerve endings
- Increase or decrease muscle tone
- Increase or decrease muscle length
- Reduce pain
- Improve range of motion
Myofascial Release Therapy
Myofascial release therapy is a massage technique that focuses on relieving pain in your myofascial tissues. These are the thick connective tissues that support your muscles.
Your myofascial tissue is a network of tissue that spreads throughout your entire body. It connects your muscles, joints, and bones. It also provides support to your organs, helping to keep them in place.
When you feel stiffness or pain in your body, it can originate from different tissues in your body. Myofascial pain is different from other types of pain because it occurs in places where your myofascial tissue meets or crosses. Myofascial pain may be difficult to identify because it can radiate from the area and spread. Tight myofascial tissue can restrict movement in your muscles and joints. As you move differently to make up for the loss in movement, you can cause additional tightness without realising it. This can lead to widespread pain and discomfort.
During a myofascial release massage, I will spend time feeling your myofascial tissue for areas that are particularly stiff and tight. These are the places that cause you to feel pain, even if it’s radiating to other areas. I will use my hand to massage and stretch your myofascial tissue and eliminate knots.
Other types of massage may be relaxing, but myofascial release therapy is often intense and can be a little painful whilst the treatment is happening. You may feel a little sore for a couple of days after treatment but you should then feel an increased range of motion and less pain or stiffness.
A single myofascial massage won’t offer long-term relief. However, regularly receiving myofascial release therapy can:
- Improve range of motion
- Reduce soreness
- Increase your body’s natural recovery process
- Helps with overall relaxation
- Improve circulation
- Relieve stress
Trigger Point/Knot Therapy
A trigger point (commonly referred to as a knot) is an area of tenderness in a muscle. Each muscle has potential trigger points which can become activated by muscle overuse. Inflammation or trauma. These trigger points can cause pain over the muscle affected or refer pain to other areas of the body. Trigger points are felt when the tissue is palpated by the therapist. Muscles with active trigger points are always weaker than normal and unable to move through their full range of movement.
This technique involves direct pressure applied to tender muscle tissue in order to relieve pain and dysfunction in areas of the body. This kind of therapy is particularly effective in the reduction of:
- Back pain
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Joint pain
Massage Consultation and Assessment
During the massage consultation and assessment stage we will discuss your needs and the nature of your visit prior to any treatment. A series of movement assessments will be undertaken to help devise a treatment plan that will also take into account your lifestyle, activities and general health.
A postural assessment will also be undertaken to help identify any imbalances that may be causing musculo-skeltal problems. The majority of people will have musculo-skeletal imbalances due to the lifestyle you lead. If you spend time sitting at a desk or writing on a computer for your job, you are likely to have imbalances in your shoulders and back. Imbalances are caused when some muscles shorten and other muscles lengthen due to continuous stretching. Massage therapy can help address these imbalances and lengthen any shortened muscle fibres.
The massage consultation process will take approx 30 mins.
