At The Orange Grove Clinic, it’s fair to say we love massage! We’re big fans. But it’s not just because it’s wonderful to take an hour out, lay on a couch and feel truly pampered. Massage can have a profound impact on our health, including our immune system. Here’s why….
- Massage may help to relieve stress. Massage has been proven to help relieve stress and anxiety, and encourage a sense of relaxation and calm. This can directly impact upon the strength of your immune system, because when we are stressed, our immune system doesn’t work as efficiently as it should. So relaxation equals better immune response, long term!
- Massage helps to improve lymphatic flow. We have a complex network of lymphatic vessels in our body, which carry our lymphatic fluid. This rich liquid carries your immune army around your body, which help to fight infection and keep bugs at bay. When we sit down all day, don’t get enough exercise, feel stressed or generally don’t take care of ourselves, our lymphatic system can become a little sluggish and less effective. The gentle strokes of a relaxation massage can help to improve lymph flow and get your immune army on the move.
- Massage can directly impact the number of immune cells in your body. As well as relieving stress and getting your lymphatic system going, research published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine in 2010 has shown that massage can actually increase the number of lymphocytes in your body, which are a type of white blood cell. Lymphocytes include Natural Killer Cells… which do exactly as their name suggests, help to kill off germs and bugs. This research also showed that massage could help reduce the level of inflammatory cytokines, which increase the levels of inflammation in our bodies. (As we know, inflammation is a underlying driver of many diseases, including arthritis, obesity, cancer and cardiovascular problems…).
